The Skinny
Meet the Minister of Finance
January 2nd, 2012Dear Members of Parliament,
You can kill two Turtle Doves with one stone at Parliament this Christmas. Figuratively, of course. With both darling decorations and gorgeous gifts galore to be gotten, you can cross more than a few to-dos off the list (sorry we don’t sell organic turkeys yet).
To close out 2011, we’ve got one last Minister for you to meet. Our gal Finance shares a few smart and sexy holiday buys.
Tina Lee, Minister of Finance
January 2nd, 2012
Roots: Vancouver born, bred and based.
Responsibilities: Ms. Money. Also, owner, planner, organizer and sometimes salesperson.
Relevant experience: In finance longer than she cares to mention (a lady is allowed secrets), 14 years in home décor.
Design aesthetic: Clean lines, not a lot of clutter.
Accent du jour: A blue-hued graphic print.
Decorating tip: Ask yourself, "How easy is it to take care of?"
Local haunts: Never the same place twice, but the last place she loved was Cork & Fin.
Her Pick: Custom Parliament Candles
January 2nd, 2012
“Our very own candles! These were created for us by the same company that supplies Neiman Marcus and Barneys New York. We named them after songs that spoke to our favourite Parliament colours: ‘Blue Monday’ is sweet honeysuckle, ‘In The Navy’ is earthy vetiver, ‘Fade to Grey’ is refreshing cucumber mint and ‘Mellow Yellow’, my favourite, is soft, subtle pear. I’ll be stuffing a few stockings with these.”
$12 travel tin, $40 standard size
Her Pick: Exclusive Vancouver Pillow
January 2nd, 2012
We also had this canvas pillow, emblazoned with the longitude and latitude of the city we love, custom-made for the store. It’s the perfect gift for a proud Vancouverite or someone living abroad who’s homesick for their hometown.”
$135 (25w x 15h)
Her Pick: Desk and Dresser Duo
January 2nd, 2012
“This sleek, lacquered three-drawer dresser with desk speaks to my love of form and function. The desk piece just rests atop the dresser, so it can be placed in any configuration—pull it out when you need to use it and push it back in when you don’t.”
In white or charcoal grey. Available now for pre-order, arrives February 2012.
$1,215 (47w x 28h x 18d, desk +49w x +2h
Meet the Minister of Interior
September 29th, 2011Dear Members of Parliament,
IDSwest is back in session for another year beginning tomorrow and running until Sunday, October 2, 2011 at the Vancouver Convention Centre. Of course, Parliament will once again be presiding over a booth of beautiful things, plus doing a little draw to give away a piece of artwork. But before you head over, be sure to swing by the store to receive $2 off your admission.
Now, let’s get to know another member, shall we? Constituents of cool, meet the Minister of Interior.
Craig Parkes, Minister of Interior
September 29th, 2011
Roots: North Van-born, East Van-based.
Responsibilities: Owner, buyer, merchandiser, muscle.
Relevant experience: 11 years retail, 8 years home furnishings, lifelong decorator of friends’ and family’s homes (unofficially).
Design aesthetic: Eclectic blend of old and new, with a soft spot for anything mid-century.
Accent du jour: All about dark blue.
Decorating tip: Don’t be afraid to incorporate more than one accent colour (his own stylish pad was featured in House & Home, so trust).
Local haunts: Marcello Pizzeria for the best Italian.
His Pick: Marcel Sofa
September 29th, 2011
“I also call it the Mad Men sofa, because of its cool mid-century styling. One of our featured furnishings at IDSwest this weekend, it comes in lots of fabric choices. I have it grey and I love how it looks alongside my more modern pieces. It also pairs well with wood tones.” Starts at $1800.
His Pick: Rugs For No Riches
September 29th, 2011
“We’ve just launched rugs this fall. They’re all 5‘ x 8‘ and all the same great price. I’m partial to the graphically bold Rome Navy [far right] and the marbled Rufus [second in from the right], which we named after my Blue Merle Australian Shepherd, but they’re all gorgeous and we’ll keep getting more. Some can be used both indoors and outdoors. Like many of our products, there are custom options too.” 5'x7'$495
His Pick: High Gloss Art
September 29th, 2011
“Our superb selection of art now comes with the option of a ‘glass coat’ finish. This modern Eiffel Tower print is a fantastic starter piece, because who doesn’t love the Eiffel Tower. In fact, I got engaged there. Well, at the other one, the one in Las Vegas, but let’s pretend it was Paris.” Starts at $365
